Clinical Study on Eclampsia

Abstract
Eclampsia is an acute disorder characterized by convulsion that are caused in some way by pregnancy induced hypertension and one of the most dangerous condition with which the obstetrician must deal. The data presented here are based on 60 cases of eclampsia at the department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of Jeonbug National University Medical School from January 1,
1975 to November 30, 1981.
1. The incidence of eclampsia was 1.9 % of all deliveries.
2. The majority of eclampsia occurred between age 20 and 24, and its percentage was 43.3%.
3. 41 patients (68.3%) were primiparous and 19 patients (31.7%) were multiparous.
4. Eclampsia occurred most often at term, 63.4% in the gestation period 37-40 weeks.
5. 41.6% of the patients had a single convulsion, which was most frequent number of convulsion. The most of patients (84.9%)had less than 3 times of convulsion.
6. 31 cases (51.6%) were antepartal eclampsia and 28 (46.7 %) were intrapartaf.
7. 43 fetuses (71.7 %) from all eclamptic patients were delivered through the vaginal route and 17 fetuses (28.3 %) by Cesarean section.
8. There were 3 maternal deaths in this study, an incidence of 5%.
9. 19 cases (31.7%) of the newborn infants had birth weights less than the mean for their gestation.
10. The perinatal mortality rate was 13.3%.
